First United Church of Christ, Springfield, Community Ministry

Our Kids & Community Ministry

Community Cookout

On the last Saturday of every month, the church hosts a cookout for the community. There is no charge. Everyone can sit in a comfortable, safe space and have a nice, hot meal. There are usually some additional things to take home, like salad greens or boxes of cereal and juice. Times vary by season.

Food Truck

On the third Friday of each month, the church hosts Second Harvest’s Mobile Pantry, a free source of take-home food supplies. Anyone who is a resident of Clark County can take home meat and dairy products, fresh fruit and vegetables, and boxed staples without charge.

Family Outreach

Each year the church partners with Horace Mann School to identify neighborhood families who could use a little extra help over the Holidays. Both Thanksgiving and Christmas boxes are prepared and sent out during the Season. Christmas boxes also include gifts for children in the family.

School Supplies

The church provides Horace Mann School with needed supplies: pencils, paper, note cards, glue, etc. The mission is ongoing based on the needs of the school and their students.

Coats & Mittens

Through our partnership with Horace Mann School, we provide mittens and coats to children during the cold months and sweat pants and other emergency clothing all during the school year.

CrossRoads Utilities

The church is part of the local Crossroads Cluster of UCC churches, a group that helps families with utility bills.

Summer Reading

We provide every child at Horace Mann School with one or two books at the beginning of each summer to start off their summer reading program.

Lending Library

The church makes a book lending library available to the neighborhood for anyone who would like to check out a book to read.

Kids World Daycare

The church is host to Kids World, a licensed, fully-accredited day care and preschool program.

Culture Fest

The church is a participant in the city’s annual Culture Fest, an exploration and celebration of the diversity of ethnic and cultural backgrounds of our city.

AA Meetings

The church hosts a regular meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous, the national program of support for those on the way to sobriety and recovery.

We host a local chapter of the TOPS Club, a national program for sensible and sustained weight loss.

First UCC Benevolence Program

We have a standing program of Benevolence that makes regular contributions of money and manpower to community programs designed to aid children and families.

One Great Hour of Sharing

The church is part of a national program of global ministry partnerships aimed at addressing world-wide issues of health, education, and agriculture development.
